Character # V, The Bhutan Trilogy is the latest chapter in Tonje Bøe Birkeland’s ongoing series The Characters, where she stages and photographs herself as a series of female explorers in unknown terrain. Her alter egos are all based on authentic women who have broken contemporary barriers and travelled to foreign lands. Giving the woman a place in the landscape and at the same time exploring the authenticity of history, Birkeland works analogically and expeditions in Bhutan. The expeditions are documented through book with the same title. The exhibition at Sukkerbiten presents new works from all parts of the book in a new installation.
