For the last two decades Gillian Laub has used her camera to document the emotional, psychological, and political landscape of her own New York family, exploring a growing discomfort with the many extravagances that have marked their lives. In confronting ideas of privilege and unity, she exposed the fault lines and vulnerabilities of herself and her relations. These concerns became even more tangible when Gillian and her parents were revealed to be on opposing sides of the most divisive political campaign and subsequent presidency in recent U.S. history. With her project, Family Matters, Laub investigates the way in which fundamental cultural concerns are often evident in our most intimate relationships, while celebratingthe resiliency and power of family in the face of such division.
