Sukkerbitens kunstnerdrevne utendørsgalleri har gjennom fem år tilbudt Oslos befolkning gratis fotoutstillinger, dokumentarer og videokunst. FRAKTs nærmeste nabo er Oslo Badstuforening, som ble stiftet av diplomater og anarkister i 2016, og som har vokst til en bevegelse som i år fyller 10 år. For å markere jubileet har FRAKT og Oslo Badstuforening invitert den norske fotografen Lars Martin Hunstad til å lage et bestillingsverk med nye bilder produsert utelukkende på Sukkerbiten.

I en by som stadig fortettes og kommersialiseres langs sjøkanten, er det nettopp Sukkerbitens tilgjengelighet som har gjort stedet til hva det er. Denne utstillingen er både en hyllest til området og et forsvar for å bevare Sukkerbiten som et åpent, offentlig rom for alle.

Hit kommer folk for å bade, sole seg, ta badstue, sosialisere, se på hverandre og henge. Forretningsfolk haster forbi dampende kropper, cruiseturister, barnevogner og kunstinteresserte. Det hverdagslige møter det underlige i en atmosfære som er vanskelig å fange i ett enkelt bilde. Uten å romantisere skildrer Hunstads fotografier Sukkerbitens energi i et bylandskap omkranset av velstand, kultur og utbygging.

På avstand kan utstillingen virke nesten abstrakt. Ingen av enkeltbildene forteller hele historien, men når man beveger seg fra det ene bildet til det neste trer enkeltkropper, møter og detaljer frem. Som et portrett av Sukkerbitens karakter og de som er med på å forme det, feirer HER/HERE den enkle, men stadig mer dyrebare muligheten til å være her.

Lars Martin Hunstad (f. 1990) er en nordnorsk dokumentarfotograf fra Fauske i Nordland, utdannet ved Bilder Nordic School of Photography. Han er bosatt i Oslo og jobber som fotojournalist med oppdrag for blant andre Morgenbladet, NRK og Die Zeit. Hans egne fotoprosjekter er vist i separat- og gruppeutstillinger ved blant annet Preus museum og Fotografiens Hus, samt publisert gjennom Norwegian Journal of Photography.

For five years, the artist-run outdoor gallery at Sukkerbiten has offered the people of Oslo free exhibitions of photography and video art. FRAKT’s closest neighbour is the Oslo Sauna Association, founded by diplomats and anarchists in 2016, which has since grown into a movement celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. To mark the anniversary, FRAKT and the Oslo Sauna Association have invited Norwegian photographer Lars Martin Hunstad to create a commissioned work featuring new images produced exclusively at Sukkerbiten.

In a city where the waterfront is continually being developed and commercialised, it is precisely Sukkerbiten’s accessibility that has made the area what it is. This exhibition is both a tribute to the place and a contribution to the goal of preserving the area as an open public space for everyone.

Sukkerbiten is a peculiar kind of space. At the edge of a rapidly changing waterfront, it remains informal, accessible and shared. People come to swim, sunbathe, sauna, socialise, watch one another and simply occupy the space. There is a particular mixture of everyday life, humour, physicality and oddness here; an atmosphere that is difficult to capture through any single image.

Hunstad’s photographs embrace this complexity without attempting to romanticise it. Rather than presenting Sukkerbiten as an idealised version of a public waterfront, they reveal its raw energy and contradictions: the strange proximity between ordinary city life and the surrounding architecture of wealth, culture and development.

From a distance, the exhibition can appear almost abstract; as the viewer moves closer, individual bodies, encounters and details emerge. The images become fragments of a larger experience, shifting between observation and reverie. No single photograph needs to tell the whole story. Together, these fragments evoke the psychological character of Sukkerbiten and all its contradictions, peculiarities and energy.

HER/HERE is ultimately about being present in a place, and about the people who make that place what it is. At a moment when the city around it is changing rapidly, the photographs celebrate the simple and increasingly precious possibility of being here.

Lars Martin Hunstad (b. 1990) is a documentary photographer from Fauske in Northern Norway. He trained at the Bilder Nordic School of Photography in Oslo, where is based. He works as a photojournalist for clients including Morgenbladet, NRK and Die Zeit. His personal photographic projects have been exhibited in solo and group show at venues including Preus Museum and Fotografiens Hus, and published through Norwegian Journal of Photography.
